Bill Walker is the Director of National Security and Cyberspace Programs at West Virginia University, where he leads the delivery of cybersecurity and critical infrastructure-related curriculum, research, policy, and exercise programs. His work emphasizes experiential learning and operational outcomes.
He also serves as Executive Director of the National Cyber Defense Center, where he oversees the development of public, private, and academic partnerships to address complex national security and cyber workforce challenges. Bill brings more than 32 years of combined military and civilian experience within the U.S. Department of Defense. Until September 2024, he served as Chief of Staff at U.S. Cyber Command’s cybersecurity and cyber defense headquarters. His previous leadership roles at Cyber Command include Deputy Executive Director, Director of Congressional Affairs, and Deputy Director of Intelligence.
Before his federal service, Bill held key roles in state and local government, including Chief of Criminal Justice for the Ohio Attorney General, Assistant Director of Public Safety for the City of Columbus, and Special Representative to the Governor of West Virginia.
In addition to his civilian work, Bill serves in the West Virginia Air National Guard as Director of Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance.
He lives just outside Washington, D.C., with his wife, Jessica, and their son, Grayson.
